Creative Gardening with Indigenous Plants (Revised edition)

By Pitta Joffe and Tinus Oberholzer

The second edition of this invaluable handbook for local gardeners, horticulturists, landscape designers and nurserymen popularises the use of indigenous South African plants in gardens, parks, on roadsides and anywhere where previously exotic plants were preferred.

Some species contained in the first edition which were found difficult to cultivate have now been replaced with more suitable choices. There is also a new section on accent plants as well as information on popular indigenous hybrids.

Taking a very practical approach with the use of symbols, distribution maps, plant size and flower colour, advice is given on the correct plants to use, be it tree, shrub, annual, perennial, climber or water-loving. Trees and shrubs are grouped according to size and shape.

Over 300 plants are illustrated by full colour photographs The text comprises a description of each plant, its usages – including medicinal and snippets of folk lore – and advice on cultivation. Propagation from seeds and cuttings and the use of indigenous plants to attract birds and insects to the garden are also covered.

Pitta Joffe, a botanist by profession, has authored a number of books on indigenous plants.

Tinus Oberholzer has had experience in propagation and production of nursery plants. He has contributed to writing and editing various gardening books and also writes for some local magazines.
