BraaiBoy’s Braai Sushi
BraaiBoy claims that every sport needs a superhero, and he is exactly that for braaiing. The current holder of the Guiness World Record for the longest braai (62 continuous hours, accomplished in 2012) and the first person to braai underwater, BraaiBoy can proud claim to have braaied at least once every single day for over seven years! He has braaied around the world, from his hometown of Pretoria to the beaches of Durban, through the diverse landscapes of Africa, and even in hotel rooms in Las Vegas. In fact, he claims he will braai wherever he can find a chop and some coals!
To share his braiiing exploits with the world, BraaiBoy has his own website (www.braaiboy.co.za) where he blogs and posts his latest recipes. He’s also recently started BraaiBoy TV on YouTube, with videos of braaiing action
Braai sushi is not fish and it’s not raw. It’s actually a great way to have cheese and bacon on the braai, and it gets its name because it looks like the ubiquitous California roll sushi
WHAT YOU NEED
12 strips streaky bacon
200g mince (spiced according to taste)
75g cheddar cheese
3-4 sweet peppadews
WHAT TO DO
Lay 6 pieces of streaky bacon vertically on a chopping board (or better yet, a sushi mat if you have one). Lay 1 piece of bacon horizontally across the 6 vertical pieces. Pull every other vertical piece of bacon down over the horizontal piece just laid down. Lay a piece of bacon horizontally across the vertical pieces you didn’t pull down. Pull the vertical pieces back up. Repeat until your weave is complete.
First make a ‘bacon weave’ mat. Cover 2/3 of the bacon weave with the seasoned mince. Place ‘tubes’of cheese on top of the mince. Finely chop the peppadews and add them on top of the cheese. Carefully roll up your braai weave and its contents. Braai on indirect heat for 20 minutes, then baste with barbecue sauce and braai for another 10 minutes. Slice into ‘California roll’ portions and serve.
Try adding a finely chopped onion and/or peppers along with the peppadews. Get creative, experiment and have fun!
