Elegant and useful, this arrangement of hanging planters will serve you well planted with fruit or vegetables and placed close to the kitchen door
What you need:
SA pine cut to the following lengths:
6 x (500 x 155 x 25mm) for the front and back
6 x (200 x 155 x 25mm) for the sides
18 x (200 x 80 x 25mm) for the base
2 x D-shackles (10mm)
2 x (700 x 12mm) pieces of rope
2 x (2200 x 12mm) pieces of rope
6 heavy-duty cable ties
80 cut screws (4 x 40mm)
Light oak wood sealer
Tape measure, combination square, pencil, hand saw, chisel, rubber mallet, belt sander, paint brush, 16mm drill bit, sash clamps
1 On all the side pieces, mark the 30mm finger joints using a tape measure and a square. The depth of the finger joints should be the thickness of the timber you are using. Transfer these markings to the front and back pieces.
2 Using a saw and chisel, remove every other marked square on the side pieces, and then the opposite marked squares on the front and back pieces, to allow them to lock together.
3 Using wood glue, and a rubber mallet to persuade the joints into place, join the sides to the front and back. Clamp in place and wipe away any excess glue that squeezes out.
4 Make the base by evenly spacing six of the 80mm-wide pieces and fixing them in place with wood glue and cut screws.
5 Drill a hole in all four corners of the bases of all three boxes, making sure that they are all line up. Then in the top box, drill a hole at the top of each side, in the centre.
6 Sand all the boxes and paint them with three coats of a good outdoor sealer, allowing each coat to dry before the next is applied.
7 Thread the rope through one hole in the top box. Tie a knot in the end of the rope inside the top box. Thread the rope through the second box and then the third box, then loop the rope back through the opposite holes in the third box, second box and top box. Tie another knot in the rope inside the top box. Fasten cable ties around the rope below the second box to act as a stopper to keep the boxes the correct space from each other. Repeat for the other side.
8 Put a D-shackle through the two holes in the side of the top box and tie the rope to the shackle to hang the boxes. You can use another cable tie here to tie the rope.
9 Line each box with weed guard, stapling it in place.
10 Plant up your hanging boxes and hang them.
