24 The Gates
Andrew and Wendy Line
Set on a north-facing terraced stand, at the end of a very quiet cul-de-sac, 24 The Gates, a five-year-old garden, is 40% indigenous, and the rest are plants that grow happily here, especially roses. The original plan was drawn by Gordon Stuart, with the planting guide from him. The owner, in true bombastic style, has added his own ideas, using the old adage from Lorraine Kettley, “Plan formal, plant informal.” Wendy has her own courtyards with vegetables, herbs and annuals. As in most gardens in winter, this one has just been given a restart, by pulling out most of the self-seeding plants and giving the beds a new lease on life with fresh planting to welcome the spring.
There will be a talk at The Gates Clubhouse at 11:00. Dave White will talk on borders, bushes and bulbs.
Directions: Take the Hilton College Road from the Life Hospital. Drive for 7km. As you enter the Hilton College Avenue, The Gates houses are on your left.
Time to view: 30 – 40 minutes
Why visit: Terraces, views, pergola, roses
