Tucked away in central Hilton, this established informal garden offers a peaceful and beautifully maintained setting filled with clivias, fuchsias, hydrangeas and azaleas. Mike and Vivienne van Breda’s garden reflects many years of careful planting and dedication. Layered with colour, texture and seasonal interest, it also features an impressive succulent collection that adds structure and contrast to the softer planting. Visitors can wander through the tranquil garden setting and enjoy special features including a charming orchid house and a working worm farm, which highlights the owners’ interest in sustainable gardening practices.

Tea and cake will be served during the event, with proceeds supporting Hilton Buddies and the van Breda family’s gardener.

Set within the beautiful Mkhuzane Valley, Ian and Mandy Tyrer’s 2-hectare jungle garden is a wonderfully wild and immersive landscape where indigenous trees, forest pathways, grasses, aloes and clivias surround the gently winding Mkhuzane River. More an immersive jungle garden than a traditional formal space, the property forms part of a family smallholding that has been in the Tyrer family since 1852. An ongoing rewilding programme continues to bring indigenous nature back to the valley. Meandering pathways invite visitors to explore hidden corners of the garden, from peaceful riverside picnic spots to the enchanting Fairy Forest. Gumboots are recommended for this section.

Tea will be served at the charming Bird & Bush treehouse cabin above the river. The garden is also a haven for birdlife, offering excellent birdwatching in a peaceful natural setting.

Established by John Geekie more than 130 years ago and still lovingly cared for by his descendants, this remarkable 30-hectare arboretum is a living legacy of vision, patience and generations of stewardship. Designed as a circular walk, Benvie invites visitors to wander beneath a magnificent canopy of exotic trees collected from around the world. These majestic specimens frame sweeping lawns, tranquil ponds and spectacular seasonal displays of azaleas, Azalea Mollis and rhododendrons. In flowering season, the garden comes alive with rich colour, birdsong and ever-changing vistas that reward an unhurried pace.

Pack a picnic, choose a quiet spot beneath the trees or beside the water, and spend time soaking up the peace and beauty of this extraordinary landscape. Explore every winding path or simply relax beneath the towering trees, this is a garden best enjoyed over several leisurely hours.

Set at Manor Hall in Hilton, this semi-formal garden combines structure and sustainability within a thoughtfully designed residential landscape. Clipped box hedges and defined garden walls create a strong architectural framework, softened by a mix of indigenous and exotic planting that brings seasonal colour and contrast throughout the garden. A traditional croquet lawn provides an elegant focal point, complemented by a peaceful garden pond and feature pots.

Sustainability is central to the garden’s design. A former swimming pool has been converted into an underground storage tank, forming part of a water harvesting system that collects runoff from gutters and greywater for the garden’s sprinkler system. A small greenhouse supports year-round vegetable production, adding a practical element to the ornamental setting. Free refreshments will be available during the open garden days.

Set in Balgowan, Riversfield Farm is an elegant formal garden within a tranquil Midlands landscape. An avenue of mature plane trees lines the driveway, drawing visitors towards the main house and garden beyond.

The design, attributed to David Hicks, reflects a strong architectural style, where structure and symmetry guide visitors through carefully composed outdoor spaces. Formal clipped hedges define the area around a classic knot garden and swimming pool, creating a sense of order and timeless elegance.

From here, the garden opens into a more expansive landscape, leading towards an arboretum and productive potager. Carefully curated views extend across a dam and into the indigenous forest beyond, connecting the formal garden with the surrounding countryside. Additional features include a tennis pavilion, a dovecote, and thoughtfully placed water elements.

Nestled in the heart of the Balgowan Valley, Notting Hill Lodge is a peaceful, park-like garden where mature trees, seasonal colour and thoughtful restoration combine to create a truly memorable landscape.

Visitors are welcomed by a spectacular avenue of magenta azaleas leading into gardens anchored by magnificent specimen trees, including a towering Saw-leaf Oak, majestic plane trees, old cherry blossoms, soaring pines and a stately walnut. Beneath their canopy, colourful plantings of azaleas, flowering shrubs, tree dahlias, watsonias, aloes and St Joseph lilies provide seasonal colour and texture.

Since purchasing the property in 2022, Koos and Lorraine de Klerk have carefully restored the landscape, removing invasive plants and creating a garden that encourages visitors to slow down and reconnect with nature. A natural spring flows through the property to a peaceful dam, where a developing picnic and forest retreat offers a quiet place to relax.

One of the garden’s most distinctive features is a contemplative labyrinth surrounded by handcrafted Culamoya wind chimes. Visitors can also enjoy a special bonsai exhibition presented by the Pietermaritzburg Bonsai Society.

Rich in natural charm, the garden invites visitors to wander through roses, azaleas, flowering cherry trees and productive vegetable gardens, all woven together by tranquil water features and shaded pathways.

Moss-covered steps lead to hidden corners, including a secret walkway lined with magnificent azaleas and the striking Pride of India. Mature trees and carefully terraced rockeries provide the enduring framework for this much-loved garden. Organic gardening lies at the heart of its success. Sharon and Marilyn nurture their plants without poisonous sprays or commercial fertilisers, relying instead on compost, bonemeal, lime and generous mulching from their stables. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and linger awhile in this peaceful country garden. You can look forward to seeing Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny in Mr McGregor’s vegetable garden.

Perched high above the valley, the garden is terraced around a classic red brick farmhouse and unfolds as a series of interconnected garden rooms, each with its own character.

Thoughtfully planned planting schemes provide colour, texture and seasonal interest. Dahlias and zinnias bring energy to the borders during the warmer months, while hellebores, lupins and climbing roses add softness and structure.Architectural features and vintage metalwork are woven throughout the garden, adding personality and a sense of history. The elevated position offers sweeping views across the Dargle Valley.

Set around the historic Hebron Haven Hotel, this country cottage-style garden flows around a central lawn with intimate garden rooms, mature oaks and plane trees and views toward the uMngeni River and dam. Fragrant pergolas, heritage roses and shaded benches create a peaceful, restorative garden shaped by nearly two centuries of history.

Directions: Take the D203 from the Tweedie junction off the N3 and proceed along until you reach the Dargle Road to your left, just before Piggly Wiggly. Proceed for about 2 km. The Hotel is well signposted. Take the first left and proceed over the level crossing; in a further 400 m, you enter the gate.

Baynes Heritage House

Step back in time at Baynes House, where a beautifully restored Victorian and English-style garden surrounds the historic Baynes Heritage House, built in 1882. Originally established in the late 1880s, the garden retains the timeless elegance of a bygone era. Majestic century-old trees provide a magnificent framework for sweeping lawns and a beautifully restored formal rose garden. Visitors can explore the Baynes House Victorian Museum, which will be open for guided tours during the weekend. The Butter Factory Museum and a display of vintage tractors will also be available, celebrating the area’s rich agricultural heritage.

Tea, coffee and cake will be available, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Plants will be available for sale, with all entrance fees contributing towards the ongoing preservation of the gardens and museums.

HERITAGE ROSE GARDEN

The Midlands Rose Society

Located within Garlington Estate in Hilton, the Heritage Rose Garden is a living archive of botanical history, created and maintained by the Midlands Rose Society. This extraordinary garden is home to more than 146 heritage rose varieties, with several still awaiting identification. Each rose dates from between the 1500s and 1945, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a remarkable collection of historic blooms. Many of these roses were rediscovered on old farms, homesteads and graveyards across South Africa. Originally brought by early settlers as reminders of home, they became lasting symbols of beauty, memory and belonging.

The garden is laid out in four colour-themed beds surrounding a central lawn, with each rose clearly labelled by name and date. Visitors are invited to wander slowly, picnic and enjoy the peaceful setting. A selection of rose cuttings, plants, seed packets, Rose Calendars and Cards by Jackie Kalley will be available for purchase. All proceeds from entry fees and sales go directly towards the ongoing care and preservation of the garden.

CASA MEXICANA

Christopher Duigan

Casa Mexicana in Pietermaritzburg, owned by renowned pianist Christopher Duigan, is a remarkable and creatively designed garden that unfolds as a series of intimate, interconnected garden rooms, each with its own atmosphere, texture and character. The garden returns this October in a new seasonal phase, with spring and early summer plantings adding fresh colour and vibrancy. Indigenous plantings, sculptural aloes and mature trees provide structure and depth, while the new Studio Garden offers an intimate, high-walled sanctuary with terracotta pots, wrought-iron detailing, water features and carefully curated planting. Throughout the weekend, Christopher Duigan will present talks on the history and evolution of Casa Mexicana. Trish of Spadework Garden and Design will also lead guided garden walks, sharing insights into the five fundamental principles of garden design.

Live piano interludes by Christopher Duigan will be performed throughout the day. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the garden will be transformed into the much-loved Night Garden experience, with carefully placed lighting, refreshments and additional piano performances.

Rather than a single private garden, guests are welcomed into a shared landscape that reflects the heart of village life, peaceful, well cared for and thoughtfully planted throughout. Mature trees, established garden beds and creative landscaping, including decorative Loffelsteyns, add texture and interest, while shaded walkways and seating areas invite visitors to pause and enjoy the surroundings.

Designed for gentle strolling, the gardens offer a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, reflecting the pride and care of the residents. During the Open Garden weekend, visitors can enjoy teas, delicious snacks, light lunches, baked goods and plants for sale.

A special highlight of the weekend is the Floral Art Display presented by the Midlands Floral Art Society and Amberfield residents in the main lounge. Visitors can also enjoy a free one-hour floral art demonstration at 10:30am on both Saturday and Sunday.

Set within the scenic Giants View Estate, The Manor House garden is a charming country cottage-style garden with sweeping Drakensberg views. Filled with roses, hydrangeas, agapanthus, lilies, coneflowers and ornamental grasses and framed by mature trees, shaded plantings and mountain vistas.

Directions: Travel 8 km on the R103 from Nottingham Road to Rosetta. As you arrive in Rosetta, turn left onto the Kamberg Road and travel 1.5 km, and you will find Giants View Estate on your left. Travel up the hill on the Estate to The Manor House.

STOCKLANDS FARM

Stocklands Farm, 4 Shafton Road, Howick

Set on an historic 3-acre farm, this parkland-style garden is shaped by generations of gardeners and rich local history. Towering specimen trees, including a 150-year-old belhambra, sweeping informal lawns, water features and heritage buildings dating back to 1839, creating a deeply atmospheric garden of scale, shade and character.

Directions: Turn onto Karkloof Road and miss the first turning to the right in the dust road. After the two massive speed bumps, turn right on a dust road and keep to the left. At this point, you will be just above Yellowood Cafe. Carry on that dusty road and go past Falles Downe Estate. Stocklands Farm garden is at the end of the road (400 m).
