Makhanda Open Garden 2026

The Makhanda Open Garden 2026 programme includes the Power Station Garden, a distinctive green space set against the backdrop of Makhanda’s historic power station.

The garden will welcome visitors on Saturday 19 September 2026 and Saturday 31 October 2026, giving the public an opportunity to explore a community space that brings together heritage, sustainable planting and creative use of a former industrial setting.

Power Station Garden

The Power Station Garden is linked to the National Arts Festival, with Tracey Nowell, Mellissa Fourie and Tim Cooper serving as custodians.Set alongside Makhanda’s historic power station, the garden demonstrates how a disused industrial site can be transformed into a productive and inviting green space.

Visitors can explore:

• Indigenous planting
• Water-wise plants
• A growing nursery
• Rare rescued plant species
• An evolving community garden

The garden brings heritage, sustainability and creativity together in a setting that is quite different from a traditional residential garden.

Directions: From the N2 heading towards Gqeberha from Makhanda, turn right on toRautenbach Road and continue for 1.1 km. Turn right onto Reynolds St. and continue for 450 m. Take a right into the dirt road where you see the Power Station sign. After 170 m turn left into the Power Station’s driveway. The gate is manual, closed on account of the goats, please let yourself in.
