View a wide variety of orchids in Wyndham’s private collection, then make your way to the main property where a beautiful mountain garden with an English country theme awaits! Bring walking shoes for the terrain.

Directions: 6 km out of Grahamstown/Makhanda in the direction of Port Elizabeth, turn left, just after the ‘falling rocks’ sign.

Time: 12:00-15:00

Time to view: 1-2 hours

The garden typifies a rambling English country garden with lush, full beds showing off an array and colours and textures. Annuals, perennials and shrubs all have a place in this tranquil space. Potted plants frame the dark pool with vibrant colour and scent, while the sounds of delicate wind chimes waft through the air, making this garden a pleasure for the senses. Birds of many species frequent the garden, including Knysna Loeries. Colourful roses line the driveway.

Directions: Turn left into Oatlands Road, off African Street (after traffic circle). Third house on left after Fitzroy intersection – ceramic number on white wall.

Directions: From Cradock Road exiting Makhanda, turn left into Hill 60, then right into Willshire Crescent and first left into Stanley Louw Street. Turn left into Jacobus Uys and follow the road as it winds around the hill to No 3 on the left. Enter on foot at driveway towards the house lower down the hill.

After the drought only the fynbos and a few hardy shrubs survived. The new owners had a well-planned garden as their canvas to bring out the potential of the stand. After three years, the indigenous trees, shrubs and roses have matured and provide a pleasant space for appreciating nature.

Directions: Turn up Miles Street past the complexes on the left. Turn into Kings Crescent – the complex is at the end of the road.

Why visit? The garden is perched on a hill with beautiful views of Grahamstown. It has colourful combination of fynbos and roses.
