Gardens of the Golden City 2024
Quondam Village Open Gardens
Saturday 26 – Sunday 27 October
79 Boeing Rd, Bedfordview, Germiston
Quondam Village has small but charming gardens, which have been well-established for almost 16 years. The public gardens have attractive touches, such as plumbago, flowering annuals, a bird bath, or a garden ornament. A sheltered garden in the back row features immaculately manicured topiary bushes between a leopard tree, lemon verbena, and red, orange, and yellow Cape honeysuckle.
Next door, a riot of colour in the raised rectangular flower beds with petunias, salvia, roses, daisies, zinnias, Iceland poppies, statice and verbena. Against the boundary wall, a large hydrangea, begonias and foxgloves. Hanging baskets in the corner with flowering impatiens. Wander into nooks and lanes past large pots with abundant cymbidium orchids, roses, a cycad.

The Sanctuary Garden, Houghton
Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 November
51 Houghton Drive, Houghton
The Sanctuary Gardens were created to stimulate healing and promote a sense of wellbeing. Designed by De La Harpe Landscapes, the brief was to renovate an old neglected garden and turn it into a peaceful and healing setting for two medical practices.
The garden has a formal layout, and the symmetrical views create harmony. The planting is a mix of formal hedging and loose planting in the stone terraced beds and a fusion of indigenous and exotic planting. Thoughtfully positioned benches create moments for reflection, and on a warm day, the garden is alive with birds, butterflies and bees. Incorporating water features adds to this garden’s feeling of peace and wellness. This is a space of renewal, health and peace.
