The common names of Heart Leaf or Elephant Ear for the Bergenia Codifolia allude to the large round leaves borne on soft fleshy stems that creep along the ground. Plants form compact clumps in semi-shaded areas and grow best in the cooler, temperate climates.

Every winter flower stems emerge from amongst the foliage to produce clusters of rose-pink flowers that last through to spring. The Bergenia Cordifolia is a rewarding and reliable little plant that maintains a strong presence in the garden all year round. Rich, loamy soils that retain plenty of moisture are ideal. It is cold and frost tolerant.
