Spring garden inspiration to brighten your season

August is National Women’s Month in South Africa, and what better way to celebrate than with flowers that bring beauty, fragrance and joy to the garden? As spring approaches, two standout choices are Lavandula ‘The Princess’ and Argyranthemum ‘Go Daisy’. These cheerful, compact flowering plants are ideal for sunny gardens, containers, pathways and entertainment areas. 

Lavandula ‘The Princess’ 

Lavandula ‘The Princess’ is a compact lavender with a neat growth habit, reaching about 40 × 40 cm. It has aromatic grey-green foliage and highly fragrant, intense pink flower spikes that cover the plant from early spring into summer. Because both the foliage and flowers are beautifully scented, plant ‘The Princess’ near entrances, along pathways, around patios or in entertainment areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed. The latest addition to the ‘Princess’ lavender range is Lavandula ‘The Snow Princess’. It has the same grey-green foliage as ‘The Princess’, but produces elegant snow-white flowers. White-flowering lavenders are always popular in garden design, and ‘The Snow Princess’ is a lovely choice for soft, fresh spring colour. 

How to Grow Princess Lavender

Plant Princess Lavender in full sun, either in the garden or in containers. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, has low water requirements and is cold and fairly frost hardy. For best results, give it well-draining soil, prune lightly after flowering and apply a slow-release fertiliser. With the right care, it will reward you again in the cooler weather of autumn. 

Argyranthemum ‘Go Daisy’

There can hardly be a gardener who does not love a Marguerite daisy, also known as a daisy bush. Filling containers and flower beds with Argyranthemum ‘Go Daisy’ now will provide months of bright, happy flowers throughout summer. The ‘Go Daisy’ range produces an abundance of large daisy flowers on neat, compact bushes. These flowers are also attractive to butterflies, making them a good choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.‘Go Daisy’ plants love full sun and regular watering. They reach about 30 × 50 cm and are cold hardy, but not frost hardy. 

Featured Variety: ‘Elsa Marshmallow’ 

Argyranthemum ‘Elsa Marshmallow’ has a unique mix of soft pink and white flowers, with bright yellow centre eyes. When the flowers are still young, the centres also show an attractive red bull’s-eye effect.This pretty variety is ideal for adding soft colour to containers, borders and sunny flower beds.
