DIY Forever Flowers

Add a burst of handcrafted colour to your garden with this fun, family-friendly DIY project. These wooden flowers are simple to make, durable outdoors and endlessly cheerful. Using basic tools and bold hues, you can create playful garden accents that stand tall through every season, rain or shine.

What you need

  • 1 sheet of pine shelving, 700 x 305 mm, 22 mm thick
  • 1800 mm and a 1000 mm dowel rod, 12 mm thick
  • 80 and 150 grit sandpaper
  • Jigsaw and drill with a 12 mm and 5 mm wood bit
  • Pencil and tape measure
  • 3.6 x 150 mm clear cable ties
  • 5 good quality paint brushes, plus sticks or paddles to mix
  • 5 small clear tubs
  • 2 x Woodoc Water-Borne Marine, 1 litre, Clear Matt
  • 3 x Woodoc Colours: Red, Yellow, Sweet Grass

Quick tips for a neat finish

  • Sand edges well, rough edges show through coloured coats.
  • Stir the tinted sealer thoroughly so the colour stays even.
  • Apply thin, even coats rather than heavy coats.
  • Keep to a minimum of three coats for the best protection.

Steps

Step 1: Trace and cut

Using the stencil provided, trace the flowers and leaves onto the sheet of pine. You will need 3 flowers and 6 leaves. Cut these out using a jigsaw. Then measure and cut the dowels to 700 mm, 800 mm and 1000 mm.

Step 2: Drill the flower base holes

At the base of each flower, mark the centre and drill a 12 mm hole 10 mm deep.  Tip: Mark 10 mm on your drill bit with masking tape so you know when you have gone deep enough.

Step 3: Drill the leaf holes

Place the leaf down, then position the dowel on top. Angle the leaf slightly so it resembles the structure of a leaf and stem. Mark the leaf on either side of the dowel and drill 2 holes at the marked points using the 5 mm wood bit. Repeat for all 6 leaves.

Step 4: Sand smooth

Sand all the pieces with 80 grit, then follow up with 150 grit for a smooth finish. Wipe down with a cloth to remove dust.

Step 5: Mix your colours

Decant the two Clear Matt sealers equally into 4 clear tubs. Add Yellow, Red and Sweet Grass into three tubs, leaving one tub untinted. In an additional tub, pour 1/3 yellow and sparingly add red to make orange.

Step 6: Paint the pieces

Apply the product with a good-quality brush:

  • Paint the 3 dowels with Clear Matt (untinted)
  • Paint the 6 leaves with Sweet Grass
  • Paint the flowers with Red, Yellow and Orange

Step 7: Seal with three coats

Apply an even first coat until the surface remains evenly glossy for at least 10 minutes after application. Allow the coat to dry completely. Sand lightly with 150-grit and wipe to remove dust. Apply two more coats in the same way.

Do not sand after the third coat. Always apply a minimum of three coats.

Step 8: Assemble

Push the dowels into the 12 mm holes. Thread the cable ties into the leaf holes and fasten the leaves onto the dowel using a nicely staggered positioning. Trim the ends neatly.
