Echinocactus grussonii

Golden Barrel Cactus or Mother-in-law’s Cushion

The Echinocactus grussonii is a large barrel shaped cactus originating from Mexico. The swollen stems are ribbed, bearing long golden-yellow thorns along the spine of each rib. The central crown is conspicuously woolly. The yellow flowers, up to 5 cm in diameter, emerge from the crown adding further impact to an already handsome plant.

Being a true Xerophyte, full sun, well-drained soil and very little water are the prime requisites of a healthy golden barrel. It needs a wide rimmed pot in order to be able to grow to full size, and can attain giant proportions of up to 1 metre in diameter.
