South African Indigenous Garden Plants

A new book by local gurus Elsa Pooley, Geoff Nichols, and Andrew Hankey is on the shelves. This is the gardener’s guide showcasing 2400 indigenous plants in a beautifully illustrated large-format book.

The Introduction lays the groundwork, covering climate, various garden styles, spatial planning, and garden maintenance, and offers suggestions for attracting wildlife to the garden. The plant catalogue introduces all the plants, from bulbs, orchids, aloes, shrubs, grasses, trees and fynbos and provides in-depth information on each. Then, the plant selector helps gardeners choose the best for their gardens. This comprehensive guide was compiled over several years and introduces a host of new and exciting possibilities for gardens and gardeners. This book will be available at stores nationwide or use the website to find it online. www.penguin.randomhouse.co.za

Time for cauliflower

‘Wallaby’ is an attractive cauliflower variety from MayFord perfect for the home garden. It is a hardy variety that thrives in the cool season and produces compact, white heads. Once the curds have started to form, protect them from the sun as well as sudden temperature changes. Draw the outer leaves over the curds and tie ‘Wallaby’ loosely. This will prevent the heads from discolouring and will keep them perfectly white. Get more planting info on the packet. www.mayford.co.za

Get your containers ready – it’s winter planting season!

During the colder months, veggies need some extra love. Why not put them in a container? Pots provide shelter and warmth during winter so that you can continue your favourite hobby all year round. This is the best time to sow RAW Kale or Parisian Carrot seeds. They grow into decadent veggies that will help you load up on important minerals and vitamins like K, A, and B6. www.rawliving.co.za
