Creating garden art with BLACK+DECKER

Everything is growing furiously now that it is summer and the rains have arrived. That coupled with warmer temperatures and longer days mean that now is the perfect time to trim and shape your shrubs and hedges with the 18V BLACK+DECKER Shear Shrubber, and for them to recover quickly.

Topiaries are a great way to add personality and character to your garden, and there are a number of plants that lend themselves to this pruning technique: eugenias, buxus, Searsia crenata (dune crow-berry), myrtles, Duranta ‘Sheena’s Gold’, Australian rosemary (Westringia fruticosa) and trees like Buddleja saligna (false olive) are all good options.

If you’re new to the art of topiary, perhaps start by creating a ‘lollipop’ or standard, by trimming the crown into a ball. Tips for this are to start with a tall, bushy plant and to stake the plant securely before you begin trimming. Trim the main branches up to the height where you want the ball or head to grow. Start shaping by trimming the stems back 2 – 3 nodes at a time. You’ll need to return regularly and keep trimming to make the lollipop thick and bushy but still neat.

Once you’ve got to grips with creating a standard topiary, you might be called to unleash your creativity in other ways. This is a wonderful way to express your creativity in the garden, and while the art of topiary making requires patience, it is a great stress release to spend time tending to a prized plant growing into a shape not intended by nature… Remember, there are so many evergreen shrubs and even herbs that can be turned into living garden art by the imaginative gardener wielding the right cutting tool.

The perfect tool for this sort of job is an electric shrub trimmer like the 18V Shear Shrubber (BCSS18B1-XJ) from BLACK+DECKER. With an 18V POWERCONNECT battery, the Shear Shrubber offers powerful performance with a long operating time per charge. It has also been designed for optimal ergonomics so that it can be used with a comfortable grip. It is also lightweight and balanced so that it doesn’t tire you out before the job is done. The 18V Shear Shrubber is incredibly versatile, as it comes with a Shear blade as well as a Trimmer blade, and the blades can be quickly switched without the need for any tools.

The Shearer blade is designed for just this sort of creative work, as it can easily cut through shrubbery branches and is short enough to allow for easy manoeuvrability.

If you have low hedges that need trimming, or if you’re creating a topiary that is more angular than organically curved (like a lovely pyramid), the Trimmer blade will be the right pick for the job. Both of these blades can also fit more than one role and can be used to trim grass and neaten up edges.
