How the whole family can save water

We need water to survive, and that’s why it’s so important to save this precious resource. If you have children, the best thing that you can do to save the environment is to teach them how to save water. Not sure where to start? No worries! All you need to do is make sure they follow these tips

Save water

Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

There are people who have a habit of letting the water run while brushing their teeth, and that wastes a lot of water. Set a good example for your kids and teach them to brush their teeth without leaving the water running. Tell them that the only time they need to turn the tap on is when they’re rinsing their mouth. If you sense that they’ll forget, you can put up a cute sign in the bathroom to remind them.

Encourage showers over baths

Taking baths requires much more water than showers, which is why showering makes a big difference when it comes to water conservation. Taking a shower is also convenient because it saves time, so tell your children to make this a habit.

Flush only when it’s necessary

This means that if there’s only pee in the toilet then flushing isn’t necessary, but if it’s anything solid then you need to flush. There’s a rhyme for this rule: “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down”. This rule only applies when you’re at home – when you’re using public bathrooms always be sure to flush.

Reuse your bath water

Save water

If bathing is something you prefer over showers, then reusing your bath water for something else is an effective way to conserve water. Scoop up your bath water with a bucket and water your plants. Alternatively, use your bath water to flush your toilet.

Wash your fresh produce in a bowl of water

Most of us wash our fruits and vegetables under running water. Rather use a bowl filled with water to wash your fruits and vegetables.

Make use of size cycles

There will be times when you don’t have much laundry to wash. When that’s the case ensure that you make use of your washing machine’s small-load option. Be careful to use the right amount of laundry detergent because too much can discolour clothes. OMO Liquid Detergent has stain removal cleaning power and it is suitable for all machine types.
