Corn Dogs

Another American classic, corn dogs are simply hot dog sausages dipped in batter and deep fried, and their origin is murky. Most can agree, though, that it was a fine idea, and you can find these at fairs and food carts all over the country to keep the kids (and possibly adults) quiet before the braai is ready.

  • 6 hot dog sausages or viennas, cut in half
  • 12 wooden skewers
  • 1 cup flour
  • ¼ cup maize meal
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • Salt and pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Make sure the sausages are dry, and thread them onto wooden skewers. In a bowl mix the flour, maize meal, sugar and baking powder and season with salt and pepper. Mix the eggs and the buttermilk together and whisk into the dry ingredients. Pour into a tall glass and set aside to rest. Heat the oil until sizzling. Dip each skewered sausage into the batter and deep fry in batches of 4 – 5 until all done. Drain on kitchen towel and serve with tomato sauce or mustard, or both.
