Jam bread sticks
Bread sticks filled with apricot jam
A braai should involve the whole family, which means also keeping the kids busy. One way to do this is by allowing them to braai their own munchies. As braaiing marshmallows is way too unhealthy and messy (and would only keep them occupied for a few minutes) we suggest getting them to help make bread sticks filled with home-made apricot jam.
- Bread dough
- Wooden dowels
- Cake flour
- Butter
- Apricot jam
Soak the dowels in water overnight. If you don’t they will catch alight on the braai. Roll out the dough and cut it into rough squares. Sprinkle them with cake flour so they don’t stick to your hands. Smear the dowels generously with butter. Roll the dough squares around the dowels. Place the dowels on the braai, turning continuously until the dough is nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the dowels, so you are left with bread tubes. Fill the tubes with jam and serve piping hot.
Hot tip
To make filling the tubes easier, fill a squeezy plastic tomato sauce bottle with jam, and simply squeeze the jam into the tubes.
