Nandina domestica
Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo
For Autumn colour there is nothing to beat Nandina Domestica and its cousins.
The lacy leaves change from green in the spring and summer to shades of red, orange and purple in autumn and winter. The colder the climate, the more intense the winter foliage colours. Although they are commonly called heavenly bamboo, they are not a bamboo, but rather bamboo-like in that they are an upright shrub that produces several slender stems from the base. It grows to about 3m high in ideal conditions. As an upright shrub they are ideal for small gardens and can take full sun and shade.
