Braai Preserves – Apple and Date Chutney

Read in Afrikaans

Add a touch of sweetness or a hit of chilli to your braaied meat with a selection of preserves, like this apple and date chutney, that you can make and keep, or give away to friends.

Ingredients for the Chutney

2 onions, finely chopped
1.5kg green apples, peeled, cored and chopped
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1 cup apple cider vinegar
750g sugar
250g stoned dates, chopped
A thumb of freshly grated ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

Place the onions in a pan with a little butter and cook on a low heat until cooked through. Add the apples, garlic and vinegar, and cook for about 15 minutes, until the apples are broken down and soft. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook on a low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes or until the chutney is thick. Pour the mixture into sterilised jars and seal.

This chutney is best left for 2 or 3 weeks in a dark cupboard to improve the flavours. Refrigerate after opening and use within a month.
