Ultra stylish shelving!

These shelves are both stylish and heavy duty – perfect for displaying pot plants. For this DIY we used a pair of heavy duty three-tier steel shelving brackets for 300mm wide shelves, available from Aluminium Flanges.

What you need:

3 x 1000mm x 300mm x 20mm pine planks

A pair of heavy duty three-tier steel shelving brackets for 300mm wide shelves

12 x 4mm x 20mm wood screws

6mm x 70mm wall anchors

Woodoc 20 indoor polywax sealer – Velvet

Turpentine

Tools:

Cordless drill, driver bit, 6mm drill bit, sander and sandpaper, paintbrush, clean cloth, steel wool

What you do:

  1. Sand the planks on both sides until smooth.
  2. Seal the timber with Woodoc 20. To do this first wipe down the wood with a cloth that has been dampened with mineral turpentine. Leave to dry.
  3. Open the Woodoc 20 and stir well with a flat spatula.
  4. Apply three coats of the Woodoc 20.
  5. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat.
  6. Sand lightly with fine steel wool after the first and second coats have dried.
  7. Once sanded, wipe down the surface of the wood with a clean, dry cloth to remove all dust, then wipe down the surface with a cloth that has been dampened with mineral turpentine and allow to dry.
  8. Do not sand after the third coat has dried.
  9. Attach the shelf brackets to the wall using wall anchors, 750mm apart. Use a spirit level to make sure the brackets are the level with each other.
  10. Slide the shelves into position on the brackets and screw into place.
