Kirstenbosch – the most beautiful garden in Africa
Kirstenbosch is a name that resonates around the world as the home of a uniquely rich flora in a setting of unsurpassed beauty. Established soon after the unification of South Africa in 1910, the Garden continues to draw tourists and locals to its enchanting spaces and botanical riches. In this book, Brian J. Huntley tells how the Garden came to be, its setbacks and triumphs, benefactors and heroes.
It outlines the Garden’s scientific eminence as the repository of knowledge on our prized flora and presents its many attractions. In this new edition, the story is updated with details of new developments and attractions, making it a quality memento for visitors and the thousands of locals who flock there annually.
Brian J. Huntley is an internationally respected conservationist with over 50 years of research and management experience in many African ecosystems, from the subantarctic to the equator. For stockists visit the website. www.struiknature.co.za/ www.penguinrandomhouse.co.za
New chillies, mild to hot
There is a chilli for every occasion and some new ones from Kirchhoffs. Get these three seed packets on your next trip to the garden centre:
- Thai Red-Hot Chilli – taking you to the heart of a bustling Thai village, where the aroma of exotic spices fills the air. These small (4 cm) chillies mature from green to red and can be used fresh or dried to add a touch of Asia to every meal.
- Sweet Banana peppers—also known as banana chillis—are a type of mild, elongated pepper with a sweet flavour. The fruit is typically yellow but can mature to red or orange. They are often used in sandwiches, salads, and pickling. They are the perfect option for those who prefer less heat.
- Hungarian Hot Wax —a variety known for its bright yellow colour that turns to orange and red as it matures. This pepper is used in cooking to add a bit of spice and flavour to dishes. It is popular in Hungarian cuisine and is commonly used in pickling, fresh salads, and garnish. The heat is not as intense as that of other peppers.www.kirchhoffs.co.za
