Build a Stunning Decor Shelf

With a few simple tools, you can create this wonderful decor wall feature with a clear Woodoc velvet finish that will last for decades.

What you need:

  • 3x pine shelving sheets 21 mm (1800 mm x 305 mm)
  • 1 litre Woodoc 10 Interior Polywax sealer (Velvet, Clear)
  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • Steel wool
  • 24 x 3.5 mm x 40 mm screws
  • 1000 mm threaded bar with a 10 mm thickness, a 10 mm wall plug and wood glue
  • Mineral turpentine

Tools

Paintbrush, a flat stirring spatula, clean cloth, tape measure, pencil, spirit level and a ruler, circular saw, jigsaw and a drill driver, Phillips bit, 12 mm wood bit, 6 mm and 12 mm masonry bits.

Steps

1. Measure, mark and cut the boards as follows:

  • 2 at 1600 mm x 230 mm
  • 4 pieces at 453 mm x 230 mm.

2. Round off the top and bottom front corners of the two long side pieces. Use a Woodoc tin to trace the curve, then cut it with a jigsaw.

3. On both side pieces, measure 100 mm down from the top and draw a line. From there, measure and mark 453 mm three times to show the shelf positions. Mark the screw points on these lines and drill pilot holes.

4.On the long outer edge of each side piece, measure 20 mm below each pilot hole line and drill holes 100 mm deep with a wood bit. Repeat for the top, first shelf and last shelf positions.

5. Sand all the timber until smooth. Remove the dust, then wipe the wood with a cloth, dampened with mineral turpentine.

6. Apply the Woodoc 10 Interior Polywax Sealer. Stir well before and during the application; do not shake or dilute. Apply a coat, let the coat dry fully and sand lightly between the first and second coats with steel wool. Remove dust and wipe with mineral turpentine before applying the next coat. Apply 3 coats with a good-quality brush, and do not sand after the third coat.

7. Stand one side piece upright on its long edge. Position one 453 mm x 230 mm shelf at each set of pilot holes and screw it in place. Repeat for all 4 shelves, then attach the second side piece.

8. Place the shelf against the wall at the height you want. Use a spirit level to make sure it is straight, then mark the top inside and outside corners of the first shelf and repeat on the last bottom shelf. Find the centre of the shelf and mark 100 mm down the corner.

9. Drill the wall using a 6 mm masonry bit, then a 10 mm masonry bit. Insert the plugs, hammer the threaded bars in, apply wood glue to the threaded bars, and push the shelf into place.
