Inspirational Wall Design

At the recent Melbourne Flower Show, designers wowed with new and innovative walls. In this feature, we take a look at inspirational wall design for your garden.

When designing small gardens, walls form an important design element and need to be considered as part of the whole design. Walls, after all, is space, just on a vertical axis. Think about interior design. Feature or accent walls are a major design feature to add colour, paintings, wallpaper and more and this concept needs to be considered outdoors too. In fact, outdoors provide more opportunity to add things like water, plants for living walls, murals and mosaics that perhaps are not suitable for an indoor design. Here are some of the inspirational wall design ideas that were presented by designers at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2023.

Matte black

According to interior designers, black is back for 2023, but now it’s matte. The idea is that black is bold and dramatic and yet goes with most colours and works with just about any style. The matte in the black has more texture and used as a background for a wall allows any items placed in front of it to stand out, especially the green of plants. Another trend is to use oak or oak-coloured items to contrast with the matte black as can be seen in a few of these examples like the teardrop bug hotels that are attached to the wall.

Mirrors and Mimicry

Mirrors have always been useful in design to make a space look bigger than it is and for small gardens this technique is ideal. We use mimicry a lot in garden design, mainly to mimic nature which gives your designs a more natural and serene feel. The idea is to bend a garden design to your will and yet have it just like nature intended. An oxymoron, I know. The fact is that a garden that doesn’t in some way mimic nature will feel wrong. If, for example, the strata of rocks in a garden are not lined up, if will look like an earthquake hit. Not the look to go for if a peaceful, relaxing space is what you have in mind.

Wallpaper and Vinyl

A new and exciting concept is beginning to show itself – outdoor wallpaper. Imagine the possibilities to decorate with a pattern by simply adding wallpaper that will take the weather. We spoke to the experts at WCI Wallpapers and they confirmed our suspicions that exterior wallpaper and vinyl is not yet available in our country, but watch this space…

What is obviously possible today is to paint a mural or pattern onto the wall with good old exterior paint. Exterior paint has heavy-duty additives that are designed to endure the harsh climate in which we live, however you can also cover acrylic paint (with more choice of colours) once it’s thoroughly dried for a few days with a varnish to make it waterproof.

A Lick of Paint

A lick of paint is the term for making a quick refurbishment, and paint is one of the fastest ways to make an impact. The all-important colour choice will take more time, after all, colour will also create a mood. Take orange, for example – not a usual colour for interiors, but for exteriors will energize the space and set up anything on the opposite side of the colour wheel like green, to be the stars of the show. Blue, on the other hand, evokes a feeling of calmness.
