Beach vibes

A light, sunny interior with a beach vibe is one of the most serene you can get.

Reminiscent of sandy holidays, the colours are cool and inviting sea and sky blues and sea glass greens with soft neutral tones of white and beige. This casual and comfortable design style is full of texture and light, and we have some beauties to add to the list in stunning houseplants to finish it off.

Areca bamboo palm

This tropical palm (Dypsis lutescens) will give just the right kind of beachy vibe this design needs. Depending on the pot size, they can grow up to 2 m tall and offer that quintessential tropical vibe. This is the next best thing if you can’t bring a giant palm tree indoors.

Notes: Bright, indirect light, water when the soil is dry to 2 cm, high humidity, feed in the growing season.

Kentia palm

From two small islands off the east coast of Australia, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, comes Howea forsteriana,  the Kentia palm. Its form has made it one of the most popular indoor palms. It grows up to 12 m in the wild, but indoors, it will grow as high as the pot allows.

Notes: Bright, indirect light, well-draining sandy soil, regular water, fertiliser in spring and summer.

Tip

Display your indoor plants in wicker or grass baskets to add colour and texture to the design theme.

Peace lily sensation

Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’ is one beautiful, bold plant. It has striking large, ribbed leaves and bonus white flowers all year. It will grow 2 m tall, so give it space – it really is the star of the show.

Notes: Medium to bright light, water when the soil is dry to 5 cm, high humidity, feed every two weeks in spring to autumn.

Weeping fig

Ficus benjamina is a useful indoor plant. It is tall enough to bring a tree vibe indoors and is tough and almost indestructible. There are variegated cultivars that add a different colour variation, but the glossy leaves of the plain green are perfect for this tropical and evergreen tree.

Notes: Bright indirect light, regular water and fertiliser in spring and summer, high humidity.

All these plants grow naturally in tropical zones and love a bit of humidity. To increase the humidity around the plants, place the pots on trays of pebbles sitting in water, use a mister to regularly spray the leaves, or invest in a humidifier.

These plants are grown by LVG Plants and are available at your local houseplant retailer.
