How to save water at home

On 22 March, World Water Day is observed to highlight the crucial role water plays in our lives. The global focus includes raising awareness that many people still lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation, while encouraging action to address these challenges. At home, we can do our part by conserving as much water as possible. Here are a few practical and easy ways to save water at home every day.

Save Water in the Bathroom

Shorter showers can significantly reduce water usage. A four-minute shower is around the length of two songs, or you can turn off the water between soaping and rinsing.

Installing low-flow showerheads can also reduce water usage by up to 60% compared to standard showerheads.

It’s also important to take note of daily habits, such as leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth, and make small changes where possible.

Save Water in the Kitchen

Running taps can waste a lot of water between 5 and 16 litres per minute.

To avoid unnecessary water use in the kitchen:

  • Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it cools.
  • Wash dishes in a basin rather than under a running tap
  • Avoid using dishwashers where possible.
  • If you do use a dishwasher, only run it when it’s full and select eco water-saving settings.
  • Install low-flow or aerator taps to reduce water loss.
  • Fix leaking taps immediately.
  • Use cooled water from cooking vegetables to water houseplants.

Save water in the laundry

Only use the washing machine when you have a full load, and select eco or quick settings to conserve water. Reusing clothes and towels before washing can also help reduce water usage.

Grey water from washing machines, sinks, baths and showers can be reused to water plants in the garden especially trees that don’t mind soap build-up in the soil.

Save Water Outdoors

When cleaning paved areas, rather use a broom, bucket and mop than a hosepipe. A garden hose can use 25 to 30 litres of water per minute.

Use a bucket of water to wash your car instead of running water continuously. A watering can is also a great way to conserve water when watering plants in containers.

Every Drop Counts

Saving water at home doesn’t require major changes. By adjusting a few daily habits in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry and garden, households can play an important role in conserving this valuable resource.
