Alternanthera

Green ‘n Gold

Alternanthera ‘Green ‘n Gold’, a native of the West Indies and Brazil, is a compact and tidy evergreen ground cover. It has thin, richlycoloured green and gold leaves and is mainly cultivated for the colourful appearance of these leaves throughout the seasons, although it does flower in winter, in white to creamy clusters surrounded by small protective bracts. Alternanthera ‘Green ‘n Gold’, a frost sensitive plant, is happiest in warm, sunny areas of the garden, growing extremely well in rockeries. Mass plantings in protected spots can be used to create a glorious carpet of living, vibrant colour. For best results, it should be planted in partial shade to full sun, in moist, free-draining soil. Light trimming will encourage dense, compact growth.
