Grow Microgreens
A great project for winter is to grow your own microgreens and baby salad leaves. This can be done in seed trays indoors, and even in a sunny room on a heating pad if necessary. The trays can also be put outside for sun during the day and then brought inside at night. Microgreens are picked when 3-4cm high, and are used as a garnish or to add an extra taste element to a dish. Just snip off the leaves with kitchen scissors and then leave the bases to sprout again, or plant a new batch instead. Sow a mix of veggies for a variety of flavours and textures. Try beetroot, brassicas, carrots, cress, chervil, coriander, celery, mustard, oriental greens and onions.
