Grow Fuchsias From Cuttings

Read in Afrikaans

Fuchsias are perfect for hanging baskets and pots, and add bright colour to a summer garden. They are also easy to propagate from softwood cuttings following these steps. Don’t forget that Fuchsias are best when planted in shade or semi-shade but will cope in a position with morning sun and afternoon shade.

What you need

  • Fuchsia plant
  • Coarse river sand
  • Palm peat
  • Propagating pot
  • Wooden skewers
  • Plastic bag
  • Secateurs

Steps for propagating fuchsias

1. Cut young growing tips 5 – 10cm long from a healthy fuchsia plant.

2. Prepare a soil mix of equal parts coarse river sand and palm peat, and fill a pot.

3. Cut the bottom leaves off the cutting and make a fresh cut in the stem.

4. Dip the cutting into water and then into rooting hormone.

5. Make a hole in the pot with a skewer or pencil, pop in the cutting and press down on the soil. You don’t want any air pockets around the cutting.

6. Reduce the size of any bigger leaves by half to reduce water stress.

7. Water well.

8. Cover three skewers with a plastic bag to form a tent, and a closed ecosystem. Label and date.

Fuchsia Cuttings Care

Keep in a cool place and check on the water often, making sure there is enough moisture for the cuttings as they root.

Rooting may take between 4 and 6 weeks, after which each cutting can be potted in its own container in moist, well-draining, fertile soil.

Pinch out the growing tips to form more flowers and make for bushier plants.

Choose a position in shade or semishade and feed weekly in the growing season with a liquid plant food.

Make sure the plants do not dry out – they like lots of water.
