Roses with Main Character Energy!

Plantland stocks a wide range of highly ornamental plants, and also home-grown roses. Not each and every rose cultivar dreamt up and developed the world over fills their greenhouses, but they sure have some winners in production and ready to plant:

‘Princess Charlene De Monaco’

Can you believe that there is a South African girl reigning as a princess of the Kingdom of Monaco and that she has a magnificent rose named in her honour? This one has the charm of old-fashioned garden roses, but with the qualities of modern ones. A spire-shaped growth habit with glossy, dark green, disease-resistant foliage supports large peony-like blooms with ruffled apricot to shell pink petals with a touch of ochre. This is a repeat bloomer with an exquisite perfume. Great as a cut flower.

‘Pope John Paul’

This rose is dedicated to the memory of Pope John Paul II and was selected by the Vatican to be planted in its gardens in 2013. The distinguished tea rose produces large and elegant, full double blooms in creamy white, and of course, has a ‘heavenly’ citrus fragrance. White roses are popular cut flowers; plant this one too.

‘Hannon’

Locally, the popular TV presenter, stylist and beauty consultant Hannon Bothma, is a household name and a diva. Another potential diva, a vibrant rose cultivar originally bred in France under a business-like code name, was chosen by us to honour the Glam Guru, as he is fond of saying: “every day of your life can be beautiful and special” – gazing upon this rose is a promise then… This is an upright to spreading T-rose with fully double and large, magenta to reddish pink blooms with a subtle fragrance. If you’re looking for more cut roses, plant this one.

‘Little Red Hedge’

Roses are not only named after family members, royalties, or celebrities. They are sometimes named after some good characteristics, and the words ‘Little Red Hedge’ suggest this. At hip height, it produces a non-stop display of pointed, bright red buds that open into masses of small blooms from its many slightly arching, spreading side branches. It is not only for hedging, but a fantastic rose to plant in a pot. If you only do romantic mini flower arrangements, this one is perfect for you.
