Trees for Indoors

Indoor trees may be trendy, but they are also timeless plants that bring life to a home.

There is an indoor tree to make a striking focal point in any room in the home and for any space and style. Whether you need a touch of greenery or a bold statement, indoor trees are excellent choices for your interior design. These are just some of the impressive specimens you will find now:

Dracaena

Several varieties of dracaena are available on the market, each with a special feature that makes it stand out. ‘Green Jewel’, for instance, has tufts of green leaves upon tall, thick stems. Varying heights make this an attractive all-round houseplant that can reach 1 – 1.3 m tall. Dracaena ‘Lemon Lime’ has arching leaves that feature stunning bright green with lemon and lime stripes. They can reach 3 m tall. Dracaena marginata ‘Magenta’ has a more spiky appearance on thinner, tall stems in colours that blend dark green and burgundy in a vibrant combination. It can grow about 1.8 m tall in a good-sized pot. Dracaenas are very easy to care for: Place them in a warm area away from drafts in bright light but not full sunlight, which may damage the leaves. They like water but not too much as to cause root rot, high humidity, and feeding only once or twice a year. That’s it – a very easy plant to grow and lovely to look at.

Ficus umbellata

Large, shiny, heart-shaped leaves in a brilliant emerald green are the main features of this ficus. Talk about bold! This is an excellent choice to make a statement. It needs a bit of room and can grow up to 1.2 m tall in ideal conditions, which also means warm temperatures, high humidity and plenty of indirect bright light. Mimicking a tropical rainforest is the best way to give this houseplant what it needs. This can be achieved by ensuring it gets frequent water, but it also dries out a bit between waterings. Overwatering may result in root rot. Most households can achieve the 50% humidity this plant prefers, but in dryer regions, added humidification may be required. The rest is standard for most houseplants: When it’s ready to repot – in this case, once a year – make sure to improve the soil with a slow-release fertilizer, that it has good drainage and that the water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Feed once a month with a liquid plant food.

Pachira aquatica

Pachira trees are common houseplants that often have their slender stems braided. This makes a statement on its own, but atop these low-maintenance houseplants are finger-splayed, hand-shaped, bright green leaves that form a pleasing canopy. They can grow up to 18 m in their natural swampy environment, but if confined to a container, they will grow more to about 2.5 m in good conditions. Pachira trees are also called the money tree for no other reason than a tale of a poor man who became wealthy from selling the trees. What makes them special is that they are non-toxic – a good choice for those with small children and pets. They prefer bright light but can tolerate some low light. Although they like consistent water, they should not be overwatered, which can cause root rot. This is another tropical plant that needs warm conditions and high humidity – a well-lit bathroom would be ideal. Feed once a month with a suitable plant food and you have a thriving money tree.
